North Fayette officials are calling for owners of private sanitary sewer systems -- such as trailer parks and industrial parks -- to pay for video inspection of their sewer lines.
Supervisors agreed Tuesday night to advertise ordinances that would require video camera inspection of sewer pipes for cracks and other damage upon sale of a property.
The inspection, by a private contractor or plumber, would cost about $150 to $200, Manager Bob Grimm estimated.
"We have spent more than $1 million trying to take care of problems in our own system, and we have to expand to solve problems beyond [that]," Mr. Grimm said.
Vice Chairman John Meyers said he wants privately owned systems that tie into the public system to comply with the same standards the township must follow.
A federal decree has required all municipalities in Allegheny County to inspect and repair their sewer systems to ensure only sewage water -- not rainwater or groundwater -- ends up in sewage treatment plants.
