Landau Building Co. was awarded a contract from Heritage Valley Heath System - Beaver for the renovation of the fourth loor of the hospital for a new Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. Paul Slowik and Associates is the architect. In addition, Waynesburg University awarded a contract to Landau Building Co. to renovate the Stewart Science Lecture Hall. The architect is VEBH Architects.
Robert VonVital was honored as sales rookie of the year at the annual Davison Awards. Mr. VonVital works at Davison in O'Hara Township. The Davison Awards recognizes individuals who exemplify the inventive spirit through their attitude, effort and performance. The Rookie of the Year award is given to a sales professional who has demonstrated exemplary drive and ability in under a year.
The Allegheny County Medical Society presented the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation with the Benjamin Rush Organization Health Service Award during the ACMS Foundation Gala, held in January. Established in 1947, the Benjamin Rush Community Organization Health Service Award honors a lay organization in appreciation of outstanding contributions to the health and welfare of the citizens of Allegheny County. In addition, the society presented Robert B. Wolf, Esq., with a special commendation during the ACMS Foundation Gala. Mr. Wolf was recognized for his leadership and ongoing counsel regarding the development and distribution of the Allegheny County Bar Association /Allegheny County Medical Society Uniform Living Will and Healthcare Power of Attorney form.
Physical therapists from The Children's Institute of Pittsburgh were presented with the "Award for Institutional Support" from Chatham University during its graduation ceremony. The award is for "extraordinary support" of Chatham's Physical Therapy Program by The Children's Institute. The physical therapy departments in The Day School and The Hospital at The Children's Institute provide opportunities for the Chatham students to work with children in a clinic setting. They also collaborate with Chatham faculty and students on clinical research projects, as well as provide lectures, work as lab assistants and serve as small group facilitators in Chatham's problem-based learning curriculum.

John Kitchin of Carnegie Mellon University was awarded $750,000 over the next five years from the U.S. Department of Energy for developing new materials for producing hydrogen and oxygen from water using electrochemistry. Mr. Kitchin is one of 69 researchers nationwide to receive funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as part of the Energy Department's Early Career Research Program. The new effort is designed to bolster the nation's scientific workforce by providing support to exceptional researchers during their crucial early career years, when many scientists do their most formative work.
Community College of Allegheny County took first place in the annual Pink Feet Race for the Cure benefitting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The four CCAC honors societies, representing each of the college's campuses, presented a check for $2,002 to Julie Philp of the Komen Foundation at a celebration in January. CCAC's contribution represented nearly half of the $4,207 total collected for the 2009 race. Jacqueline Robinson, a CCAC honors student at West Hills center in Oakdale, collected $700 to help CCAC to victory.
